Donald D. Jones

July 16, 1927 ~ March 11, 2019 (age 91)

Donald D. Jones, 91, of Washington IL, formerly of Mason City IA, passed away at 12:40am Monday, March 11, 2019 at Washington Christian Village.

Don was born July 16, 1927 in Carroll, IA to the late Guy S. and Nina E. Engleman Jones. He married Helen Jean Albert January 1, 1949, and they enjoyed 67 years together before she passed away on August 9, 2016.

Surviving are sons, Guy Thomas (Sharon) Jones of Santa Ana, CA and Steven David (Nancy) Jones of Metamora, IL; two grandchildren, Joanna Jones Walton of Peoria, IL and David Jones of Denver, CO; a brother, Stanley (Gertrude) Jones of Harlan, IA, many nieces and nephews, 4 step grandchildren and 7 step great-grandchildren. 

Don served in Germany with the Army Air Corps from 1945-1947 as a medic. Upon returning home, he graduated from the American Institute of Business at Des Moines and began a career in the poultry industry. With his wife, he was the owner of Whittemore Hatchery. He was very active in professional associations and civic organizations over the years in Des Moines, Ankeny, Denison, Sac City, Whittemore, Algona, and Mason City, Iowa. 

Don and Jean moved to Mason City in 1978 and lived there for 38 years. Don proudly received the Lions Club’s Lifetime Achievement Award for his dedicated humanitarian services.  He was an active member of First United Methodist Church, serving the church in many capacities.  He was also a 30 year member of the Manly Pioneer Town and Country Golf Club.

In March of 2016 Don and Jean moved to East Peoria, IL to be closer to family as their health declined.

A memorial service will be held at 11am on May 4 at the First United Methodist Church in Mason City, Iowa.  Don has donated his body to the College of Medicine at the University of Iowa for scientific study. Inurnment will be at a later date at Oakland Cemetery in Denison, IA.
