Susan "Sue" L. Cleveland, 73, of East Peoria, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 5, 2026, at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home.  Sue was born on October 14, 1952, in Peoria, Illinois, to Francis and Shirley (Hersemann)Hayes, who preceded her in death. She married the love of her life, Gary Cleveland, on December 20, 1975, at Washington Presbyterian Church, beginning a marriage that would span more than 50 wonderful years.

Sue dedicated much of her life to education, teaching at J L Hensey School and Lincoln Grade School in Washington. She paused her career as a full-time teacher to raise her family. When the opportunity allowed, she continued to share her love of teaching by serving as a substitute teacher during those years.

Sue was an avid reader; she found joy in tending her garden and traveling with those she loved.  Among her favorite destinations were Gulf Shores, Key West, and Sedona, places where she created precious memories with family and friends. Above all else, Sue treasured time spent with her family, especially her beloved grandchildren.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Gary Cleveland of East Peoria; her sons, Matt (Sara) Cleveland of Argyle, Texas, and Brett (JR DePriest) Cleveland of Peoria; her grandchildren, Carter and Aiden Cleveland; her sisters, Nancey DeSola of San Tan Valley, Arizona, and Debbie (Mark) Welch of Washington; her niece, Caitlyn Martens; and her nephew, Cameron Welch.

In accordance with Sue's wishes, cremation rites have been accorded by Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington. Family and friends are invited to visit on Friday, July 10, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
