Steven Ray
Dowdell
Mar 8, 1954 — Apr 2, 2026
Steven Ray "Steve" Dowdell, 72, of Dunlap, passed away on Thursday, April 2, at OSF Hospital in Peoria.
Steve was born on March 8, 1954, in Philadelphia, the son of the late Junior Ray and Imojean (Day) Dowdell. He married Brenda McIntyre on October 16, 1999, in Washington. They shared nearly 22 years of marriage before her passing in 2021.
Steve took great pride in providing for his family, building a 43-year career at Caterpillar and advancing to General Manager. Even after retirement, his dedication to his family remained at the center of his life.
He lived his life intently for his family, with an extra special presence for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Whether in gym bleachers, on the sidelines, at ball fields, or attending any event that mattered to them, it was well known among teams and families that he was always present, cheering on his favorite people every chance he had.
He was known for naturally adopting families and neighbors as his own, in his unique way of making each person feel warmly welcomed, genuinely important, and deeply loved.
He also shared a special bond with his faithful companion, his dog, Opie, who was a constant presence by his side.
Steve is survived by his children: Chris (Leslie) Dowdell of Carlock; Brad (Tammy) Dowdell of Harrisburg, Missouri; CJ Smith of Bartonville; Chris Smith of Peoria; Chad Smith of Peoria; and Brett (Angie) Smith of Creve Coeur. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Sydney (Colin), RyLee, Josie, Rylee Ann, Anthony, Lexy, Ashley(Sean), Alex, CJ Jr., Taylor, Brett Jr., Zach, Cameron, and Jayce; Great-grandchildren: Lillian, Coan, Austin, Alivia, Levi, Lincoln, Lyla; his brother, Randy (Cindy) Dowdell of Sullivan, Illinois; his sister, Beth Friend of Elk River, Minnesota; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
A visitation for Steve will be held on Tuesday, April 7, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Deiters Funeral Home in Washington. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 8, at 10:00 a.m., also at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Chillicothe City Cemetery. Rev. Scot Shelburne will officiate the service.
Those who wish may leave memorials in Steve's name to GBC Autism Services.
