Obituary

Shirley Means, 89, of Washington, passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at the Eureka Apostolic Christian Home.  Shirley was born on October 13, 1936, in Crane, MO; the daughter of the late Webster and Grace (Wilks) Russell.  Shirley married Oscar Means in Peoria on July 1, 1954; they shared nearly 65 years together until he preceded her in death on April 16, 2019.

Shirley worked for 30 years for District 150 at Glen Oak in the cafeteria; retiring in 2001.  Outside of her work Shirley mostly loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She loved to share her talents at sewing, crocheting, baking, and making candy for her family and friends.  She was really known for her amazing homemade fudge and peanut brittle.

Shirley is survived by her children Gary Means of Henderson, NV, Kenny Means of Roanoke, Cindy (Tim) Broshears of Washington, Julie (Mark) Wilson of Bartonville, three grandchildren Janet Means, DJ (Megan) Kober, Jenna (Joshua) Johnson, five great-grandchildren: Mariella, Deacon, Maeve, Jayton, and Jett, her sister Janice Hamby of Las Vegas, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

In addition to her parents and husband Shirley was preceded in death by her granddaughter Tiffany Broshears, her sisters Phyllis Means and Betty Hoskins, and daughters-in-law Chieko and Linda Means.

A visitation for Shirley will be held on Thursday, August 20, from 5-7 pm at the Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington.  To honor  Shirley's wishes cremation rites will be accorded following the visitation.  Shirley and Oscar will  be inurned at Lutheran Cemetery in Peoria at a later date.

In lieu of flowers please make memorials in Shirley's name to the Apostolic Christian Home in Eureka.
