Obituary

Robert M. "Slim" Derrick, 86, of East Peoria, IL and formerly of Creve Coeur, IL died on Friday, April 29, 2022 in East Peoria. Born on July 9, 1935 in Quincy, IL to John and Myrtle Adams Derrick, he married Nancy Lee Boster on February 16, 1958 in Peoria, IL. She preceded him in death on November 26, 2010. Bob is survived by his son, Nick Derrick of Washington, IL, and daughter Sandy Pearce of East Peoria, 4 grandsons, Michael and Christopher Pearce and Nicolas and Nathan Derrick, and 3 great-grandchildren, Jordynn, Jayda and Michael Pearce, many nieces and nephews and his friends at Mel's and Main Street Café who brought a lot of joy to Bob's life. He was preceded in death by his beloved brother, Jack Derrick. Bob was a proud United States Marine Corp Veteran, serving during the Korean War as a tank retriever from 1953-1956. He worked for several shops as a diesel mechanic, including DMI where he repaired and rebuild factory machines, and Caterpillar Tractor Co. where he worked as a heat treat operator and an education and training instructor. He then worked and then retired from Weise Caterpillar Lift Trucks as a foreman where he did lift truck repair. Bob was also a man who enjoyed serving his community. He served as the President of Peoria Memorial Association, Commander of VFW Post #814 Peoria, Director of Soldiers Hill of Springdale Cemetery, and volunteered at Springdale Mausoleum. He also enjoyed calling bingo for the Germantown Hills PTO for 5 years, was the Quartermaster for the Military of the Cootie, was a member of the Korean War Veterans, and was named as the Illinois VFW Man of the Year in 2007. Services will be at 10 am Friday, May 6, 2022 at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington. Pastor Bob Martin will officiate. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Thursday, May 5, 2022 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Springdale Cemetery in Peoria, IL where military rites will be accorded. Memorials may be made to any local VFW or to the American Legion Post #100 in Washington.
