Obituary

Obituary Richard L. Garner, 92, of Washington passed away at 7:49am Friday, August 11, 2017 at the Villas of Holly Brook in Washington. He was born on January 10, 1925 near El Dara, IL to Herman and Ethyl (White) Garner; they preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by six sisters, Winnifred, Florene, Marjorie, Charlene, Leola, and Doris; and a brother, Wendell. He married Dorothy J. Fisher on July 3, 1944 in Palmyra, MO; she preceded him in death on March 24, 1989. Together they had two children, James Richard Garner of Germantown Hills who survives, and Mary Lea Garner, who preceded him in death. He then married Norma J. Logan on January 26, 1996 in Washington; she preceded him in death on February 13, 2016. His three step-children survive; Pamela Mangene of Fort Myers, FL, Mark Wittekiend of Germantown Hills, and Anne Wittekiend of Washington. During World War II, he served in the 371st Combat Engineers, U.S. Third Army. After the war, he received his B.S. in Education from Western Illinois University. He also received his Master of Arts from Bradley University. He taught at Washington Community High School for 21 years, retiring in 1983. Prior to that, he taught and coached at Hardin, Kincaid, and Petersburg, IL high schools. Among his accomplishments was coaching the 1956-57 Hardin Calhoun varsity basketball team to the first regional championship in school history. He also worked as a crop hail insurance adjuster and supervisor for 31 years. He was a member of Crossroads United Methodist Church in Washington. He was also a member of the El Dara Masonic Lodge, Peoria Scottish Rite, Peoria Mohamed Shrine, and the Washington America Legion Post. The family wishes to thank UnityPoint- Proctor, the Villas of Holly Brook, Transitions Hospice and his church for their care of Richard in his final days. A funeral service will be held at 3:00pm Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at Crossroads United Methodist Church in Washington. Pastor Dan Doty will preside. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Shearer Cemetery in New Canton, IL at noon Wednesday, August 16, 2017. Memorial contributions may be made to Crossroads United Methodist Church.
