Obituary

Phyllis Wabel-Vandenberg, 87, of Morton, passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 8, 2025 at the OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria.

She was born October 16, 1937 in Terre Haute, Indiana to the late John D. and Mary (James) Gossman.  She was also preceded in death by one sister, Shirley Feger; and one brother, John Gossman.  She married Larry C. Wabel in Washington in 1960.  He preceded her in death in 1968.  She later married William Vandenberg in 2001 in Pekin and he preceded her in death in 2006.

Surviving are three sons, Greg (Lisa) Wabel, Mark (Sherry) Wabel, Gary Wabel; eight grandchildren, Zach, Shelby, Hunter, Leah, Sam, Ashley, Austin, Anthony; three great-grandchildren, Veronica, Xion, Kai; one sister, Lynn (Dan) Corey; one brother, David (Tracy) Gossman; and several nieces and nephews.

Phyllis was a homemaker most her adult life and enjoyed that greatly.  She was a member of the Red Hat Society and loved spending time at the beach.  She will be dearly missed.

Per her wishes, cremation has been accorded.  There will be a private family celebration of life at a later date.  Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington is assisting the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to OSF Hospice Home or to the Alzheimer's Association.
