Obituary
PEORIA - Norma Scovil Mall, 77 of Peoria, IL and formerly of Washington, IL died Saturday, July 20, at her home in Peoria surrounded by her daughters.
Born on July 9, 1936 in Peoria, IL to Russell and Wanda Hartman Scovil, she married Vernon Mall on January 14, 1956 in Peoria, IL. He died in January of 2008.
They had 6 daughters, Leah (deceased 1995), Lora (Randy) Benway of Horicon, WI; Alissa (Ron) Simmons of Vista, CA; Mary (Gregg) Larson of Couer d'Alene, ID; Angela (Tommy) Larson of Pecatonica, IL; and Maureen Mall of Rockford, IL; 2 granddaughters, Elle Benway, and Lisa (Josh) Kording; 6 grandsons, Joel and Tim Benway, Tony and Charlie Adams and Stephen and Jonny Larson; and 1 great-granddaughter, Edie Kording. Norma had 3 sisters, Judy Scheidegger of Fort Pierce, FL, Carol Berardo (deceased 2012) and Suzanne (Jim) Godfrey of Orlando, FL; 3 brothers, Russell (Lee) Scovil of Kansas City, KS, Richard (Karen) Scovil of Peoria, IL, and David (Joanne) Scovil of Sarasota, FL; and many nieces and nephews.
Norma was a 1954 graduate of Academy of Our Lady High School in Peoria.
She was a 40-year member of St. Patrick Church in Washington, where she was a Lector and Extraordinary Minister of The Eucharist for many years.
She was a long time Docent at St. Mary's Cathedral in Peoria. She was a member of the Catholic Woman's Apostolate of Mount Alverno and Cursillo and was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Peoria Heights where she was one of the Vincentians. She was a 1999 recipient of The Diocese of Peoria Pere Marquette Award.
Norma had been a volunteer at both OSF St. Francis Medical Center and Methodist Medical Center. She had been a part of the Picture Lady program at both Lincoln Grade School and St. Patrick Grade School in Washington.
A former 4-H leader, she had served on both the Tazewell County and State Leadership Boards. Norma had worked for the Peoria Journal Star as a Tour Guide and had been a History Tour Guide for Peoria Historical Society since 1989, where she helped write and lead the first History Trolley Tours. She was a member of the Peoria Historical Society and served on the board of the Washington Historical Society. Norma was a degreed member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians and served as both a Division Officer and a State Officer.
Norma believed everyone was entitled to her opinion.
A funeral mass for Norma will be at 11 am Friday, June 26, 2013 at St.Thomas Church in Peoria Heights. Visitation will be from 5-8 pm Thursday, July 25, 2013 at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington and from
10-11 am Friday at the church. A prayer service will be conducted by the Mary T. Quinn Tazewell County Division 1 L.A.O.H. at 7:45 pm Thursday at the funeral home. Cremation rites will be accorded following the Mass.
