Obituary
WASHINGTON - Melvin L. Aitken, 90, of Washington, IL, died at 5:50 pm Monday, October 29, 2007 at Washington Christian Village in Washington.
Born on November 18, 1916 in Peoria, IL to John and Mabel Leas Aitken, he married Dorothy I. Massey on February 10, 1942 in Cahoka, MO. She died on April 3, 1977 in Arizona.
Surviving are 1 daughter, Diane (Ron) Hartzell Sr. of Washington, 1 son, Steve (Criss) Aitken of Washington, 1 brother, Willis "Woody" (Mary Ellen) Aitken of Peoria, IL, 4 grandchildren Kim(Dennis) Bacon, of Pekin, Ron(Deb) Hartzell Jr. Of Peoria, David Aitken of Chicago and Brian(Nikki) Aitken of Bloomington, 5 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 son, Allen Earl and 1 brother, Virgil.
He was a member of the US Army Air Corps, serving during World War II.
Melvin worked in Billing and Demurrage for Peoria & Pekin union Railroad for 34 years, retiring in 1976.
An avid golfer, he was a long time member of Hillcrest Golf Course in Washington and also of the Peoria Seniors Golf League. He was an avid Cubs fan.
Services will be at 1 pm Friday, November 2, 2007 at Deiters Funeral Home in Washington. The Rev. Jeff Browning will officiate. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Thursday, November 1, 2007 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Peoria.
