Obituary Washington - Maurice D. "Morrie" Schap, 83 of Washington, IL died at 5:40 PM on Sunday March 2, 2014 at his residence. He was born January 29, 1931 in Stockton, IL to Melvin and Helen Payne Schap. He married Atsuko Matsumura on May 5, 1955 in Kobe, Japan; she preceded him in death on May 20, 2004 in Peoria. He was also preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are 2 sons, Charles M. (Carole) Schap of San Marcos, CA and Thomas E. Schap of Largo, FL; 1 sister, Carol Jane Winkler of Las Cruces, NM; 1 brother Phil (Saundra) Schap of Phoenix, AZ; and 2 grandchildren, Emily Schap and Alexandra Schap. Morrie was a Master Sergeant in the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He retired from Caterpillar Tractor Co. in 1986 after 40 years in research at the Mossville Tech Center. He was a member of the American Legion Post #2 in downtown Peoria. Morrie was an avid gardener and loved politics. He made his own wine, enjoyed photography, and also enjoyed car mechanics. Visitation will be from 4-6 PM Friday, March 7, 2014 at Deiters Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington. Cremation rites will be accorded following the visitation.
