Obituary
Madeline Mary Armstrong, 89, of Washington, passed away at 6:19 pm Monday, October 31, 2016 at her home.
Madeline was born November 23, 1926 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Arthur and Madeline Claus Herzog. They lived on Long Island until moving to Peoria when she was seven. She married John R.C. Armstrong on June 22, 1946, and their marriage spanned over 68 years, ending with his death on August 21, 2014.
Surviving are her nine children, Kathleen (Robert) King, Thomas (Debra) Armstrong, John (Sue) Armstrong, Elizabeth (Tom) Zentz, William Armstrong, Barbara (Martin) Klein, Arthur (Lesa) Armstrong, George (Theresa) Armstrong, and Jane (Richard) Gestrine; thirty-one grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two grandsons, Daniel Armstrong and William Klein; a great-great-grandson Orien Armentrout; brother in law, T. Robert Armstrong; and sister in law, Alice DeFriese.
Madeline graduated from Peoria Central High School in 1944; she then attended nursing school in New Bedford, MA, where she met her future husband. They moved to Peoria soon after their marriage, and remained in the area since. She was a longtime member of St. Andrew's Church in Peoria, where she was active in the women's group. She also was a member of St. Mary's Altar Guild. More recently, she attended St. Michael and All Angels Anglican Church in Peoria. Madeline was also active in her neighborhood group, the Sundoer Protective Group. A kind, gentle, and loving woman, she will be missed greatly by her family.
A Funeral Mass for Madeline will be held at 11:00 am Monday, November 7, 2016 at St. Michael and All Angels Church, Peoria, IL. Father Shawn Doubet will officiate. Visitation will be from 6-8:00 pm Sunday, November 6, 2016 at Deiters Funeral Home & Crematory, Washington. Additional visitation will be from 10-11:00am Monday at the church. Interment will be at Springdale Cemetery in Peoria.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael and All Angels Church or the Peoria Area Food Bank.
We are grateful to the loving care provided by Staff of Life caregivers, especially Virginia Covington and Carolin Miller, who cared for Madeline the past four years, as well as Lola Simmons. Without them Madeline would not have been able to remain at home.
