Obituary
Luther "Lou" Thomas Dixon, 88, of East Peoria, IL passed away on Thursday, November 4, 2010 at his home.
Luther was born on December 23, 1921 in Monticello, KY the son of Eli and Lula (Sexton) Dixon. He married Patricia "Pat" Burke on July 4, 1942.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years; 1 son, Richard of East Peoria, IL; 3 daughters, Barbara (Roger) Julien of Metamora, IL, Carol (Gary) Sweeney of Morton, IL, Cheryl (Arthur) Noll of Morton Grove, IL, 9 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and 1 brother, Clyde (Mary Ellen) Dixon of Galesburg, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters and 3 brothers.
Luther served his country in the United States Army landing on Normandy Beach and surviving to Berlin in World War II from 1942-45. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal and the Bronze Star.
Luther could be found daily at Couri's Food Town in East Peoria during the 50 years he worked there, until his retirement in 1983.
He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed nature: hunting and fishing, golf, watching NASCAR, and the St. Louis Cardinals, but his passion was bowling. Lou was inducted into the Bowlers Hall of Fame in St. Louis and the Greater Peoria Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1980. Lou was honored by the East Peoria City Council when November 2nd, 1980 was proclaimed "Lou Dixon Day" in recognition of his many outstanding bowling accomplishments in the previous 30 years. He was also a member of the East Peoria VFW.
After his retirement, Lou spent his days caring for others by doing yard work for the elderly and widowed, helping neighbors, and his children.
Funeral services will be at 11 am on Monday, November 8, 2010 at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in East Peoria. Pastor Rod Ruberg, Lou's nephew, will officiate. Visitation will be 2 hours prior to services at the funeral home. Burial will be at Fondulac Cemetery in East Peoria.
