Obituary

Kathy Grabel, 66, of Washington, passed away at her home, surrounded by her family, on Monday, March 24, 2025.

She was born March 10, 1959 in Peoria to the late Charles and Virginia Hobin Hausam. She grew up in a large, loving family that included 11 siblings: Margaret H. Ryan, Tom (Sue) Hausam, Nan (Steve) Powers, Phil (Angie) Hausam, Chuck (Anne) Hausam, Teri (Bob) Larson, Mary (Dave) Cowan, Julie (Carl) Niemeier, Ann Sutter, and Sheila (Bob) Davis, all who survive, and Chris Hausam, who has preceded her in death.

On August 11, 1984, she was united in marriage to Robert A. Grabel in Peoria, sharing over 40 wonderful, devoted years with him.

Together, Kathy and Bob raised two precious, kind children, Peter Grabel (Sara Frye) and Faye (Keith) Clark, watching their family grow to include a beautiful source of love and fulfillment in their grandchildren, Jamie and Elliott, who meant the world to her.

She is also survived by her sisters and brothers-in-law, John (Tanya) Grabel, Beth (Dave) Dechant, Fred (Kathy) Grabel, and Kris (Klinton) Gamble, and her numerous nieces and nephews.

Kathy lived life fully, whether she was traveling, entertaining family, or simply sharing a small moment, her whole heart was in it. She loved connecting with nature through hikes, fishing trips, and cycling. Creating a home for her family is part of her legacy; she took great pride in designing and curating her homes and even shared that great taste by helping others do the same. An excellent communicator and lifelong learner, she was always seeking to grow. Kathy started her career as a licensed cosmetologist. While raising her kids, she went back to school, earning her degree from Bradley University. She taught and subbed at area elementary schools for many years, a role she embraced and enjoyed.

Kathy's family will gather to celebrate her life and vibrant personality on Saturday, March 29, 2025 at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington. They will receive friends and family from 1-3:00pm, with a ceremony beginning at 3:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Forest Park Nature Center or the Illinois CancerCare Foundation.
