EAST PEORIAa"Joseph E. Crawford, Jr., 83, of East Peoria, formerly of Bloomington, died at 10:34 PM on Monday, September 3, 2007 at home surrounded by his family.
Born on May 17, 1924 in Chattanooga, TN to Joseph E. and Marion Fitzpatrick Crawford, Sr., and raised in New York City, he married Eileen T. Raycraft on October 25, 1952 at Glenview Naval Air Station. She preceded him in death on April 29, 1982. He later married Dorothy M. Kingery on July 19, 1986 in Peoria, IL. She survives along with her children and grandchildren.
Also surviving are 2 sons, Joseph E. "Skip" (Patti) Crawford III of Bloomington, IL, and Mark Crawford of Gilbert, AZ; 1 daughter, Teresa Crawford of Chicago, IL; Twin granddaughters, Sarah and Katie Crawford; and 1 brother, John (Marion) Crawford of Floral Park, NY.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and 1 sister, Dorothy Wieboldt.
Joseph was a US Navy Veteran, serving as a naval pilot from 1944-1964, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
He received his Master's Degree from Illinois State University, and taught in the Bloomington Public School System for 20 years. He was also the first president and co-founder of the Bloomington Education Association.
Joseph was a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus Msgr. E. L. Grzybowski Council 7580, and was a very active member of St. Monica's Catholic Church in East Peoria, serving as an usher and also in the food pantry.
A funeral mass will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, September 6, 2007, at St. Monica's Catholic Church in East Peoria. Fr. Kenneth Marchulones will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5-7 PM on Wednesday, September 5, 2007 at Deiters Funeral Home in East Peoria, with a rosary service beginning at 6:45 PM. Additional visitation will be held one hour prior to mass on Thursday at the church. Graveside services will be at 2 PM on Thursday, at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, IL.
