WASHINGTON - John F. "Jack" Powell, 57, of Washington died at 1:07 am Thursday, January 28, 2010 at BroMenn Healthcare in Normal, IL.
Born on December 18, 1952 in Peoria, IL to John W. and Margie Bowers Powell, he married Patrice C. Johnson on April 22, 1978 in Peoria, IL. She survives in Washington.
Also surviving are 2 sons, John E. (Alicia) Powell of Leroy, IL, Tim Powell of Washington, IL, and 2 daughters, Oceanna Powell and Elizabeth Powell, both of Washington.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 sister, Violet Marie Sisk, 1 nephew, Brian David Sisk, and an infant brother, Frankie Powell.
John was a 1970 graduate of East Peoria Community High School. He spent the summer of 1977 at the Kibbutz-Eilon in Northern Israel working as a chicken handler, banana harvester, among many other jobs.
He had worked at Mitsubishi Motors in Normal, IL since 1989 where he worked on door sub-assembly. He was a proud member of the Union Local #2488, where he served as editor of the Union Spirit for 3 years, winning numerous awards for his articles including the Luna Award. He also served as a District Representative for 4 years and a Benefits Representative for 11 years. He was always actively involved in defending the rights of workers.
John was an avid Cardinal baseball fan, and was artistically and musically gifted.
A service celebrating John's life will be at 4 pm Sunday, January 31, 2010 at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington. Visitation will be from 2-4 pm on Sunday at the funeral home. Cremation rites will be accorded following the services and inurnment will be at a later date at Lutheran Cemetery in Peoria.
