Obituary John L. Philips, 68, of East Peoria, passed away at 1:04pm Friday March 17, 2017 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria. John was born May 31, 1948 in Berwick, PA to Olin H. and Betty Cappe Philips. He married Mary Darlene Mattingly February 1, 1975 in Lexington, IL. Surviving is his wife, Darlene; children, Eric (Jessica) Philips and Melissa Philips; grandchildren, Parker and Emerson; and siblings-in-law, Janice (Tim) Nix, Jim Mattingly, Jean (Tom) Fugate, Connie (Joe) White, Sue (Kyle) Davis, Len Geiger, and Brenda Philips. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Lee Philips; brother, David Philips; sister, Linda Geiger; and brother-in-law, Mark Mattingly. John served in the US Army during the Vietnam War, and was honorably discharged in 1970. He went on to work for Caterpillar, retiring after 39 years of service. He was active with Boy Scout Troop 163 in Washington for many years and loved woodworking. His family was his top priority and he loved spending time with them. A funeral service for John will be held at 11:00am Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington, military honors will conclude the service. Visitation will be from 4-6:00pm Monday, March 20, 2017 at the funeral home. Brett Gosteli will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital-Midwest Affiliate.
