Obituary
Herbert Daniel Rice, 89, of Overland Park, KS, formerly of East Peoria, passed away at 1:00pm, Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at Emeritus at Overland Park.
Herb was born October 4, 1925 in Glasford, IL to Daniel and Anna Allgaier Rice. He married Wilma Yates in 1950 in Glasford; she survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Donna (Ivan) Glasco and Debbie (John) Potter; daughter-in-law, Sherrie Rice; and grandchildren, Lauren and Jason Rice; Bryana Glasco; and Stephen, Allison, and Jenna Potter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Eunice and Helen; and a son, Daniel.
Herb joined the US Army in December 1943, where he was assigned as a member of the 399th Regiment, 100th Infantry Division. His unit trained in the mountains of Tennessee and Ft Bragg, NC from 1943-44. The division was sent to the European Theater in October 1944, where it initially engaged in the battle of Vosges Mountains, and near Bithce, France in November and December 1944. The regiment made their way to Germany, crossed the Rhine, and engaged in battle near Stuttgart, finally occupying the Goppingen area as the war came to an end. As an integral part of his unit's success, and the success of our nation during WWII, Herb earned a Bronze Star and a Combat Infantryman's Badge. He was discharged from active duty in April 1946, at the rank of Technical Sergeant.
After his time of service, Herb graduated from Bradley University in 1950 with a degree in Engineering. He went on to work for Caterpillar Tractor Co. as a research engineer, retiring in 1989. After retirement, he enjoyed volunteering with the Festival of Lights and traveling to warmer places in his travel trailer.
A funeral service for Herb will be held at 1:30pm, Saturday, November 8, 2014 at Faith Lutheran Church in Washington. Visitation will be a half hour prior to the service at the church. Entombment will follow at American Mausoleum in Peoria, with military honors. Pastor John Rothfusz will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to Faith Lutheran Church.
