Obituary East Peoria - Gussie J. McCollum, 95, of East Peoria died at 2:44 AM on Thursday March 27, 2014 at Rosewood Care Center in East Peoria. She was born March 15, 1919 in Darden, TN to James Ernest and Grace Gertrude Tolley Wilkins. She married Claude Lee McCollum on April 13, 1940 in Corinth, MS. He preceded her in death on April 25, 1991 in Inverness, FL. She was also preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and two sisters, and one grandson Gregory Lee. Gussie is survived by three children, Barbara Ann (Virgil) McMurtrey of Crocker, MO, Tony McCollum of Washington, IL and and Bev McCollum of Bellevue, NE, five grandchildren, Gary (Kelly) McCollum, Keith McCollum, Deanie (Jon) Srakovcic, Larry(Shelly) McMurtrey and Shelley (Andy) Nordwall and five great-grandchildren. During World War II, Gussie worked for Lexington Shirt Factory in Lexington, TN making uniforms for the military. She later worked 23 years for Wahlfelds Lumber Co in Peoria. She enjoyed gardening and working in her flower beds. She was a member of the Order of The Eastern Star Washington Chapter 115 in East Peoria and a former member of Oakwood Avenue Baptist Church in East Peoria. There will be a funeral for Gussie on Saturday March 29, 2014 at 4:30 PM at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in East Peoria. There will be a visitation from 3 to 4:30 PM at the funeral home. Pastor John Plunkett will officiate. Interment will take place at 11 AM on Monday March 31, 2014 in Lexington City Cemetery in Lexington, TN. Memorial contributions may be made to Harbor Light Hospice or TAPS.
