Obituary

Obituary Gordon L. "Gordy" Campbell, 89, of Washington, passed away at 10:10pm on Monday August 15, 2016 at the Villas of Hollybrook in Washington. He was born November 15, 1926 in Bluffs, IL to William and Mary "Molly" Mayes Campbell. He married Marjorie F. (Sprague) Walker on August 20, 1971; she survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Susan (Dwayne) Stuart of Memphis, TN and Sandra (Steve) Wyatt of Magnolia, TX; three step-children, Julie Walker Ibrahim of Anderson, SC, Jan (Will) Teufel of Germantown Hills, and Scott (Joni) Walker of Matthews, NC; eight grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James Robert Campbell; sisters, Mary Traw and Martha Brockway; and his son, Larry Campbell. After graduating from Bluffs High School in 1944, Gordon enlisted in the US Army and fought in the Philippines conflict. He was very proud to be a veteran of WWII, and was privileged to be part of Peoria's Honor Flight to Washington DC in 2014. He received a Bachelors in Education from Illinois College in 1951 and a Masters in Education from Northern Illinois University in 1967. From 1951 to his retirement in 1986, Gordon spent his entire 35 year teaching career at Yorkville Community School District #115 in northern Illinois. Aside from being a beloved teacher, he coached several sports, served in many administrative roles, and was the high school athletic director for many years. In 1983, in recognition of his dedication and service to Yorkville High School, its football field was named Gordon Campbell Field, a name it still holds today. He was a member of Faith Church in Washington, faithfully serving and volunteering for many years. A funeral service for Gordon will be held at 11:00am Monday, August 22, 2016 at Faith Church in Washington. Visitation will be from 9-11:00am Monday at the church. Interment will be at Glendale Cemetery in Washington, with full military honors. Pastor Rick Brisbin will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Faith Church or the Greater Peoria Honor Flight.
