Garry Dean Kensler, 77, of Peoria Heights, IL, died at 11:59 am Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at his home. Born on August 13, 1943 in State Center, IA to Robert and Helen Leathers Kensler, he married Edna Irene Ruggles on June 19, 1966 in Ollie, IA. There were married for 54 years. Garry is survived by his wife, Irene, 2 daughters, Christine Gleason (Jeff Kretlow) of Bloomington, IL, and Dana (Michael) Couch of Clive, IA, 5 grandchildren, Daniel Gaul, Sarah (Mark) Trygar, Jacob Gleason, Hadley Couch, and Braylan Couch, and 8 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his siblings, Jean Brown, Bobby (Mary) Kensler, and Linda (Marion) Short and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant sister. Garry graduated from Ollie High School in 1961, then went on to Universal Trade School in Omaha, NE in 1962. He was an auto technician all his adult life. He worked at Jim McComb Chevrolet for 22 ½ years, working his way up to service manager. He then went on to Riverside Chevrolet for 5 years, operated his own shop, Kensler Auto, for 5 years and was a maintenance engineer at the Paradise Hotel in East Peoria upon retiring in 2003. He was Past President and a Lifetime Member of the Peoria Casting Club. He also was a member of the Allendale Conservation Club. He enjoyed fishing and camping, loved John Deere, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. Visitation will be private and a graveside service will be at 2 pm Monday, November 23, 2020 at Ollie Cemetery in Ollie, IA. Masks and social distancing practices will be expected. Memorials may be made to OSF Hospice.
