Obituary
WASHINGTON - Florence Eunice "Flossie" Marshall Lorengo Matthews, 90, of Washington, IL, died at 7:10 am Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at her home.
Born on July 8, 1921 at Coopers Station to Edward T. and Addie Mae Small Marshall, she married Charles Lorengo on December 4, 1941 in Canton, MO. He died on February 24, 1960 in Eureka, IL. She later married Richard E. Matthews Sr. on April 15, 1965 in Washington, IL. He also preceded her in death on February 8, 2003 in Washington, IL.
She is survived by her children; anita delight of Tacoma, WA, Kathy Smith of Washington, IL, Vicki Lorengo (Chuck Lorengo, deceased) of Germantown Hills, IL, Steven (Renee) Lorengo of Wenona, IL, Vickie (Ted) Shaw of Savannah, GA, Richard E. (Jeana) Matthews Jr. of Carlock, IL, Gary Lee (Lisa) Matthews of New Brunswick, NJ, James (Julie) Matthews of West Palm Beach, FL, and Sara (Jim) Wheeler of Flanagan, IL, 24 grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren several nieces and nephews, many great nieces and nephews, and her many extended family members from the Marshall, Lorengo, and Matthews families.
Flossie was preceded in death by 2 children, Chuck and Juanita, 1 grandson, Corey Matthews and 2 great-grandchildren, Andrew and A.J. Smith, and her siblings Eugene Marshall, Morris Marshall, Irma Gordon, Orville Marshall, and Bernice Thrailkill.
Over the course of her life, she was a beautician, worked in the restaurant industry, and loved being a home sales associate for various companies. Flossie loved crocheting, watching games shows, playing cards and board games, sporting events, reading, especially Harry Potter, and spending time with her family and grandchildren. Her family will greatly miss her cooking, especially her potato salad and dutch apple pie.
When she married Richard (Dick) Matthews, they lovingly blended families raising nine children each and every one of whom they treated as theirs. She enormously loved the many grandchildren born of the union of their families.
Flossie was a member of St. Patrick Church in Washington, where she was a member of the Women's Guild and the St. Pats Coffee Klatch. She also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Washburn, IL.
The family would especially like to thank her beloved nieces Judy Koch, Janet Booth, and Joyce Underwood for all their loving care and support. In recent years, Flossie also considered her caregiver, Lucy Haedicke, as one of her daughters.
A memorial mass will be at 11 am Friday, October 14, 2011 at St. Patrick Church in Washington. Msgr. John Prendergast will officiate. Visitation will be from 4-6:45 pm on Thursday, October 13, 2011 at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington, where recitation of the Rosary will begin at 6:45 pm.
