Obituary
WASHINGTON - Emil C. Haeflinger, 61, of Pekin and formerly of Washington, IL, died at 8:27 am Saturday, January 24, 2009 at his home.
Born on July 20, 1947 in Audubon, IA to Emil Alfred and Erma Marie Lambert Haeflinger, he married Kathleen Bowen in 1967. He later married Judith Blanchard Mason on January 14, 1978 in Peoria, IL. She survives.
Also surviving are his mother, Erma Haeflinger of Audubon, IA, 1 daughter, Stephanie (Gary) Deiters of Washington, IL and 1 son, Rich (Julie) Mason of Fishers, IN, and 6 Grandchildren, Alexandria, Elizabeth, Luke, Clare, and Isaac Deiters, and Zachary Mason. Also, 3 sisters, Ione (Chuck) Hardy of Clarksville, IA, Treva (Jerry) Jensen of Audubon, IA and Jeanine (Francis) Frank of Houston, TX and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father and 1 nephew, Daniel Frank.
He served with the US Army Reserve.
Emil received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from the University of Iowa where was a member of Beta Alpha Psi, Beta Gamma Sigma, and Delta Sigma Pi. He began his career as a public accountant at Price Waterhouse & Co. in Peoria in 1969. He then took the position of Controller at Illinois Central College in East Peoria in 1972. Certified as a Public Accountant in 1975, he became Vice President for Administration and Finance/ Treasurer at ICC. His professional memberships included the Illinois Association of Community College Business Administrators (IACCBA), Illinois Association of School Business Officials (IASBO), and the Illinois Community College Finance Committee. He had served as a Member of the Board of Trustees for the State Universities Retirement System, Illinois School District Liquid Asset Fund and as Chairman of the Illinois Association of Community College Business Administrators and Past President of the Illinois Community College Chief Financial Officers Association (ICCCFOA). He served as President of the Illinois Central College Retirees Association 2006-07.
Emil retired from ICC in 2001 after 30 years of dedicated service, but his heart never left ICC.
Emil & Judi moved to the lake at Oak Terrace in Pana where Emil further enjoyed his passion for golf & fishing. He always loved woodworking and retirement allowed him to refine that love. In 2005, Emil & Judi moved back to Tazewell County to be closer to the grandchildren who he cherished greatly.
Emil served as Treasurer of Easter Seals of Central Illinois 1990-94, President of the East Peoria Chamber of Commerce 1986, Vice-President of the Washington Chamber of Commerce Board 1991-94, and was a long time member of the Peoria Downtown Rotary. He also served on the Washington Police and Fire Commission and the Washington Economic Development Council. He was a member of Pana Country Club.
He was a creative thinker and financier, a gifted writer, and an administrator who always remembered the human interest in every circumstance. He will be remembered as a gentle, fair, and honest man, who never met a stranger.
