Obituary

Obituary Elwood Roy "Woody" Hersemann, 88, of Springfield, formerly of East Peoria, passed away at 3:38 p.m. Sunday, August 30, 2015 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield with his family by his bedside. He was born March 14, 1927 in East Peoria, IL to Elmer C. and Anita E. Leuallen Hersemann. He married G. Myrline Jenkins on October 31, 1946. She preceded him in death on July 22, 1994. He later married Karey S. Soper in Reno, NV on March 21, 1999. She survives. Also surviving are 8 children, Jamie (Terry) Onken, Jody Eaker, Joel (Mary Kay) Hersemann, Jeff (Luann) Hersemann, Jill (John) Haddad, Damon Soper, Stephanie Cribbett, Christy Nolan; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Kenneth (Donna) Hersemann. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, La Verne; and grandson, Christopher Ryan Eaker. Woody was a veteran of WW II. He joined the navy at age 17 and served on an LST in the South Pacific. He returned home to East Peoria finished high school and married his high school sweetheart, Myrline Jenkins. He remained in East Peoria where they raised their children until he moved to Springfield in 1999. He was one of the last surviving crew members of the LST he served on. He attended several LST reunions including the last one held in New Orleans in 2004. Woody worked at A & P Grocery Co. and Caterpillar Inc., retiring in 1989. He loved camping, fishing and the outdoors. He and Mryt spent many summers camping in the Great Smoky mountains while raising their children. He was an avid cardinals baseball fan and rarely missed a game via radio, TV or in person. When baseball season was over, his attention turned to the Greenbay Packers but his main love and devotion in life was his family. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Midwest Affiliate. Woody's funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, September 5, 2015 at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in East Peoria with Rev. Lloyd Brock officiating. Visitation will be from 12 Noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in East Peoria at a later date.
