Obituary

Obituary WASHINGTON- Edie Mitchell, 80, of Washington, was Promoted to Glory on Thursday, August 18, 2016 at 1:40 P.M. at Fondulac Rehabilitation and Health Care in East Peoria. Edie was born on February 24, 1936 in Memphis, TN to Chester Lee and Lillian Alberta Kelly Fields. She married Lowery E. 'Arkie' Mitchell on July 3, 1953 in Peoria. He preceded her in death on March 7, 2002. She was also preceded in death by her son, Reverend Ed Mitchell, her parents, and her sister-in-law, Marilyn Fields. She is survived by her daughter, Kristi (Steve) Archer of Washington; daughter-in-law, Linda Mitchell of Indianapolis, IN; brother, Cliff Fields of Creve Coeur; niece, Lillian Alberta (Andrew) Seaton of Germantown Hills; and one great-nephew, August Seaton. Edie was a 1953 graduate of Woodruff High School in Peoria and started working for Caterpillar Tractor Co. where she remained for 45 years, retiring in 2000. In the mid 70's, Edie received her Bachelors degree from University of Illinois at Springfield after attending night school with a dear friend. Edie loved her church, The Salvation Army. She discovered it as a child from an open air meeting and never left. She served as a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Corps Council until declining health forced her hand to step down. Edie loved God's creatures as much as she loved her church, maybe more. She was an advocate for each critter God created. In her opinion, there was never an excuse for cruelty to animals. Memorial contributions may be made to The Salvation Army Peoria Citadel Corps, where she was a devoted and faithful Soldier, or to Pets for Seniors, as Edie loved all animals dearly. A visitation will be held on Thursday, August 25, 2016 from 5:00 P.M.-7:00 P.M. at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington. A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 26, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington. Major Heath Sells will officiate. There will be a visitation a half hour prior to the service. A private interment will be at Hillcrest Memory Gardens in rural Morton at a later date.
