Obituary

Obituary Douglas N. Smith, 59, of Peoria, IL, passed away at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 9, 2015 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria. He was born August 2, 1955 in Peoria to Jerald and Patricia Stewart Smith. He was preceded in death by his mother on January 25, 2014. Surviving are his father, Jerald Smith of East Peoria; brother, Walt (and Tami) Smith of East Peoria; and niece, Alexandria Smith of East Peoria. He graduated from East Peoria High School in 1973 as the senior class treasurer and an Illinois State Scholar. He is also a graduate of Blackburn College. He was the owner of Big Dog Treestands in Morton IL. He was a member of TMA (Treestand Manufacturers Association) and Ducks Unlimited. Doug enjoyed home construction and renovation always making his homes sought after by others. Doug, along with his father and brother built and developed local homes and apartment buildings. He was also employed by the United States Department of Defense at the Rock Island Arsenal. In 1994 at a ceremony at the Pentagon, the Secretary of the Army, Togo Smith, Jr., presented Doug with the civilian award of Suggestor of the Year for implementing changes which saved the government $12.3 million dollars. He was also employed by Caterpillar. He was a big supporter of athletics, especially the East Peoria Girls Fastpitch Softball Association, University of Illinois, and Bradley University. Doug loved watching NCAA basketball, was an avid golfer, weight lifter and loved to walk. Doug's work took him to China often and he enjoyed traveling and exploring. Doug treasured his loving family and his many childhood and adult friendships. He also supported great organizations such as Peoria Rescue Mission, Red Cross, and the Center for Prevention of Abuse. He was a donor for the Hopes of Life. Douglas loved dogs so in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to T.A.P.S. in South Pekin. Celebration of Life Services will be held at a later date.
