Obituary
Dorothy A. Astwood, 94, a long time resident of Fishkill, NY died at 8:15 AM on June 2, 2011 at Rosewood Care Center in East Peoria, IL. She was born on March 28, 1917 in Erie, PA to Daniel and Sigrid Marie LeSalomie.
Surviving are her son Norm (Kristy) Astwood of Chillicothe, IL and her daughter Nanci (Jack) Kryzak of Clinton Corners, NY, one sister Jeanne (Willard) Klapthor of Grand Haven, MI, five grandchildren also survive: Lara (Matt) Biggs, Jennifer Astwood (Tim Dolan), Heather Astwood, Andrew Kryzak and Lindsay Kryzak, and three great grandchildren, Katie Biggs, Amanda Biggs and Lucia Dolan.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Wynne Mabie, and her parents.
A professional musician, in her high school years she performed on the "Dot and Dash Show" on local radio in Erie, PA. During the 1930's, Dorothy played the piano on a cruise ship between Erie and Port Dover, Canada, and with local bands. Prior to World War II, she moved to New York City, where she was a special booking agent for the New York Central Railroad as well as a pianist. Known professionally as Billie Martin, she was a proud member of Local 802 (New York City) of the American Federation of Musicians. After World War II, she was well known throughout the Hudson River Valley as a pianist at numerous restaurants and supper clubs. Dorothy also worked in the advertising department of the Poughkeepsie Journal in the 1960's and taught piano in the Fishkill area. She was retired from Chemical Bank (JP Morgan Chase) in New York City, where she worked in the 1970's; she then worked for Wachovia Bank (Wells Fargo) in Hopewell Junction, NY.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, June 10, 2011 at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington, IL. Father James Kruse will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Cremation rites will be accorded.
