Obituary
David W. Matheny, 83 of Washington, passed away at 5:22 PM Saturday, September 8, 2012 at his home. David was born on January 22, 1929 in Peoria to the late Cody and Margaret (Moffatt) Matheny. He married Phyllis Edwards at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in East Peoria on October 1, 1949. She survives.
Also surviving are three daughters and one son, Linda and Dave Kecskes of Lombard, Susan and Rob Elston of Metamora, Laurie and Dean Forden of Morton and Andrew Matheny of Washington; 9 grandchildren, Stephanie Forden, Beth (Nick) Grant, Rachel (Mike) Brown, Michelle Elston, Hallie, Evan and CheyAnne Matheny; step-grandchildren, Brandon and Drew Erickson; a great-grandson, Tristan Brown; a brother, Alvin and Bev Matheny of Peoria; 2 sisters, Janet and Don Mitzelfelt of Tremont and Lucy Lobberecht of East Peoria; step-brother, Bill Schlesinger of Peoria. David was preceded in death by a brother, Tom Matheny, a nephew, Shelby Matheny and a niece, Kathy Sills.
Dave graduated from East Peoria Community High School and he served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He first worked at Illinois Bell Telephone Company in Peoria, but helping people gave him great satisfaction and he became a State Farm Agent for 40 years with his office located in Sunnyland. After his retirement in 1996, he assisted children with their homework at Common Place in Peoria for several years. He loved playing golf, tennis and pool with his friends. He was an active member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, serving as an elder, and Sunday School Teacher.
The family would like to send a special thanks to Methodist Hospice, especially to Peg, Linda and Kathy for their compassion and care.
Honoring Dave's wishes cremation rites have been accorded. A Memorial Service will take place at 11:00 AM Friday, September 14, 2012 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in East Peoria. Pastor Kurt Mews will officiate. Visitation will take place at the church on Friday from 9:00 AM until the time of service. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Deiters Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington.
