Obituary WASHINGTONa"Darla A. Mellody, 73, of Washington died at 3:35 PM on Tuesday, July 3, 2007 at her residence. Born on January 22, 1934 in Jackson County, IA to Ralph and Anna Mommsen, she married Robert D. Mellody on September 9, 1956 in Maquoketa, IA. He preceded her in death on March 19, 2001. Surviving is 1 son, Bruce (Karen) Mellody of Bloomington, IL; 2 daughters, Barbara (Steven) Griffin of Sherman, IL and Christine Mellody of Flora, IL; 2 granddaughters, Carrie and Sarah Griffin, 1 grandson, Jared Mellody, and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents. Darla was a homemaker her entire life. In her later years, she loved to drive her car and never wanted to be at home. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and going to all their school programs and recitals. She was a Girl Scout Leader and trip organizer for many years, volunteering with the Kickapoo Council in Peoria and in the Quad Cities. She also served in the capacity of president and volunteer for WHIP (Washington Helps Its People). Darla was a member of the Washington Community High School Band Boosters for 11 years, serving as co-president with her husband from 1982-1983. She and her husband were the first adults to receive the John Philip Sousa Band Award. She was an election judge for over 25 years, and was a member of the University of Illinois Cooperative Extension, serving as Tazewell County President from 1999-2002. Darla was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Washington since 1971. She was very active on several committees and especially enjoyed the quilting committee. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, July 7, 2007 at Faith Lutheran Church in Washington. The Rev. John Rothfusz will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4-7 PM on Friday, July 6, 2007 at Deiters Funeral Home in Washington. Additional visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Saturday from 10-11 AM at the church. Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery in Washington.
