Obituary
Charles Leander Koonce, 84, of Washington, IL, died at 6:35 pm Thursday, January 2, 2014 at Manor Care at Riverview in East Peoria, IL.
Born on May 28, 1929 in Mounds, IL to Edgar Thomas and Christina Lee Beaver Koonce, he married Cathern Ann Certalic on October 22, 1955 in Washington, IL. She survives.
Also surviving are 3 daughters, Debra (James) Morgan of Morton, IL, Pamela (Richard) Gosnell of Glendale, AZ, Tina (David) Murray of Washington, IL, and 1 son, Mark (Janet) Koonce of Armington, IL, 1 brother, Ralph Koonce of Washington, IL, and 1 sister, Dorothy Davis of Beloit, WI, 8 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by 1 brother and 4 sisters.
Charles served as a Sergeant First Class with the United States Army from 1948-1951, where he was a Photographer.
He was a plumber for 45 years working for Kimpling Hardware in Washington for 35 years and the Peoria Housing Authority for 15 years, and was a member of the Plumbers Union Local #63.
He was a member of the Taylor Lodge #98 in Washington; Scottish Rite, Peoria; Mohammed Temple, Peoria; Past Master of Peoria Lodge #15; and Past President of Peoria Greater Shrine Club, Broiler. He also was a member of the American Legion Post #100 in Washington and a former member of the Amvets Post #64 in Peoria.
Services for Charles will be at 11 am Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington. Pastor Doug Hicks will officiate. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Monday, January 6, 2014 at the funeral home, where a Masonic Service will be at 6:45 pm. Burial will at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in rural Morton, where military rites will be accorded by the US Army.
