Charles D. "Charlie" Heathcoat, 84, of East Peoria, IL died at 6:47 pm Saturday, May 15, 2021 at his home.
Born on April 19, 1937 in Peoria, IL to William E. and Edna Thompson Heathcoat, he married Sally Howell on May 10, 1958 in Peoria. She survives.
Also surviving are 2 sons; Curt (Cheryl) Heathcoat of Gilbert, AZ and Craig (DeAnne) Heathcoat of Peoria, AZ, 5 grandchildren; Alan Heathcoat, Aric (Jordan) Heathcoat, Chad (Chiara) Heathcoat, Clay Heathcoat, and Crysta Heathcoat, 1 great-granddaughter due in July, and 5 siblings; Barbara Darling, Dave (Cathy) Heathcoat, Kevin (Toni) Heathcoat, Carol (Pete) McCleary, and Sharon (Leon) Beck.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 5 siblings: Edward, Donald, Donna Elaine (Don) Davis, Gerald "Jerry" and George "Pete".
Charlie was a proud U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Signal Corp from 1958-1960, stationed in Germany for part of that time, followed by four years in the Army Reserves. In 2018, he was honored to go on the Greater Peoria Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.
He graduated from Woodruff High School in 1955 and started immediately at Keystone Steel. He worked there 44 years as a machine operator. He retired in 1999, and he and Sally moved to Lake of the Ozarks, MO, for five years, returning to Peoria in 2004. In 2007, Charlie received a kidney from his older son Curt. That is when they began wintering in Arizona to be close to their sons.
Charlie enjoyed working on just about anything and was known to always keep busy. He enjoyed meeting twice annually with classmates from his 8th grade class at Reservoir Grade School in Peoria, was a member of the American Legion, and the First Baptist Church in Peoria. He owned two Models A and was a member of Central Illinois A's as well as the now disbanded 4Ever Fours.
A memorial service for Charlie will be at 11 am Friday, May 21, 2021 at First Baptist Church in Peoria. The Rev. Dr. Rob Collins will officiate. Visitation will begin at 9 am Friday at the church and will conclude at 10:45 am. Inurnment will follow at Springdale Cemetery in Peoria, where military honors will be rendered. Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington is assisting the family with arrangements.
Memorials may be made to his church or due to his love of the military, the Greater Peoria Honor Flight.
