Obituary

Obituary WASHINGTON- Betty Jeanne Rappe Carlton, 73, of Washington, passed away and left her worldly body behind to soar with the angels on Monday, May 23, 2016 at 9:50 A.M at her residence. Betty was born on October 31, 1942 in Peoria to Joseph O. and Mary Leutze Rappe. She married Arthur E. Carlton on September 10, 1961, they later divorced in 1978. During their time together, they had two beautiful children, Arthur "Sparky" E. Carlton II and Melody A. Carlton Elam. Betty had many jobs over the years. She worked as a playground monitor at Beverly Manor grade school for many years. She was also a line worker for Pabst Brewing Company and worked in Patient Accounts Receivable at OSF St. Francis Medical Center for 13 years. She enjoyed all of her jobs, but nothing made her as proud or brought her as much joy as being Sparky and Melody's mom. Over the years, Betty suffered many illnesses and hardships. She fought breast cancer twice, lung cancer, CLL, two brain aneurisms, and macular degeneration, but none of those compare to the loss she suffered on February 28, 1995, when her son passed away. Betty remained strong for her daughter, Melody, always teaching, always guiding, and always loving unconditionally. She will be dearly missed. Surviving is her daughter, Melody (Terry) Elam of East Peoria; two granddaughters, Nichole Arnold (Jason Pownall) and Brigette (James) Cole; four great-grandchildren, Zack, Keira, Danny, and Tyler; one sister, Shirley Black; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son, "Sparky", and her brother-in-law, Ronald Black. Memorial contributions may be made to Susan G. Komen for the Cure or to a hospice organization of the donor's choice. There will be a funeral Mass for Betty on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at 11:00A.M. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Washington. Father Julius Turyatoranwa will officiate. There will be a visitation one hour prior to the Mass. Interment will be at Glendale Cemetery in Washington.
