Obituary EAST PEORIAa"Betty V. Behrends, 83, of East Peoria died peacefully in her sleep at 5:15 am on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at Heartland of Riverview Health Care Center in East Peoria. Born June 14, 1927 in Anna, IL to Fredrick and Mary Robison Kelley, she married Bertwin E. Behrends on July 22, 1951 in East Peoria. He preceded her in death on February 13, 2009 in Peoria. Surviving are 3 children, Janice (R. Kim) Williams of Naperville, IL, Julia Behrends of East Peoria, and Scott (Sonja) Behrends of Raleigh, NC; 5 grandchildren, Christopher, Scott and Alex Williams, and Tyler and Leah Behrends, and many other loving family members. She was preceded in death by her parents, her identical twin sister, Barbara Lee Worms, and numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law and other family members. As a child, Betty and her twin sister, Barbara, competed in numerous twin conventions, playing the saxophone and twirling batons. A graduate of East Peoria Community High School, Betty attended art classes at Bradley and worked briefly at Caterpillar as well as her father's grocery store, before marrying and becoming a homemaker and mother. Betty established and led the Shady Knolls Sugar Bowls 4-H Club. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in East Peoria for 69 years, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the choir and bell choir. She later taught knitting, crochet and needlework classes for Fondulac Park District. She was a member of the local China Painting Guild and enjoyed water color and oil painting. As an adult, Betty learned to play piano and swim when her children started taking lessons. She also served as a judge in the Home Economics Barn during the Heart of Illinois Fair in Peoria. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM at the First United Methodist Church in East Peoria on Thurs, June 9, 2011. The Rev. Mary Arnold will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5-7 PM on Wed, June 8 at Deiters Funeral Home & Crematory in East Peoria. Additional visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church.
