Obituary Bernadine "Bernie" A. Smith, 84, of Pekin, formerly of East Peoria, passed away at 2:45pm Sunday, October 13, 2013 at Pekin Manor, Pekin. Bernie was born November 7, 1928 in Peoria to John Orville and Bernadine Marie Pitsch Flanagan. She married Charles E. Smith August 4, 1951 in Peoria; he survives. Also surviving is a son, Scott (Dianne) Smith, Pekin; daughter, Kathy (Greg) Hendrickson, Lindenhurst; granddaughters, Melissa (Larry) Youngberg and Courtney (Mike) Cornick; great-granddaughter, Sydney Youngberg; brother, Roland (Beverly) Flanagan, Morton; sister, Joan (Max) Cheatham, East Peoria; step-granddaughter, Becky (Randy) Beavers; step-great-grandsons, Ben (Hailey) Tull and Ian Tull; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Richard Flanagan and John "Jack" Flanagan; and sisters, Colleen Masters and Arlene Flanagan. Bernie retired from the accounting department at Pekin Hospital, where she worked for many years. After her retirement, she volunteered with the American Cancer Society's Reach to Recovery Program and the American Red Cross. She was a member of St. Monica's Catholic Church, East Peoria, where she was a member of the Ladies' Guild and bible study. She will always be remembered for her love of her family.
