Obituary Washington - Avis Lorraine Bernius, 66, of Washington, died at 4:02 PM on Thursday June 19, 2014 at OSF St Francis Medical Center in Peoria. She was born February 26, 1948 in Columbus, NE to Fred and Claudia Chollar Schultz Sr. Avis married Lee Bernius on August 24, 1990 in Peoria. He survives. Also surviving are her children,Cynthia (Vance) Smallwood of Peculiar, MO and Matt Houck of Peoria, four grandchildren, Rashelle King, Brandon Smallwood, Tyler Smallwood, Elizabeth Smallwood and one great grandson, Majick Anderson. She is also survived by 7 siblings, Roberta (Dale) Lovell of Columbus, NE, Shirley (Bob) Durko and Darlene Schultz, both of Fort Worth, TX, Janet Longnecker, George (Linda) Schultz, and Herb (Nancy) Schultz, all of Columbus, NE, Don Schultz of Gridley, IL and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Fred Schultz Jr. Avis graduated Valedictorian of El Paso High School in 1966. She was a data entry clerk at XPAC in Bartonville for 11 years. Avis enjoyed reading fantasy and mystery books and working puzzles. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and was also an excellent cook. There will be a Funeral Service at 11 am Friday, June 27, 2014 at Deiters Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington. Pastor Howard Love will officiate. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to service at the funeral home. Cremation rites will be accorded following the service. Memorials may be made to American Heart Association.
