Alma Jean
Fassett
Jun 19, 1925 — Jun 14, 2026
Alma J. Fassett, 100, lifelong resident of East Peoria, went to be with Jesus on Sunday, June 14, 2026. Alma was born on June 19, 1925, the daughter of Jacob and Louise (Hugh) Wiegand. Raised on the family farm in East Peoria, Alma was one of four sisters who remained close throughout their lives. During WWII, Alma worked at Camp Pendleton in California and as a "Rosie Riveter" at CAT on the piston ring line. Then she returned to high school to earn her diploma while still working at CAT. She married Francis Fassett in 1950 and they shared 52 years together until he preceded her in death in 2002. She earned her master's in education and taught for many years at Lincoln and Shute elementary schools. Her dedication for teaching continued after retirement and she was a substitute teacher until she was 90 years old. Alma resided at EverTrue Lutheran Hillside Village in Peoria for the last three years of her life, where she was much loved.
Alma was an avid golfer, enjoyed traveling, volunteering throughout her life, and valued her many friendships including the "Chatty Chicks". She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Peoria. Most of all, Alma loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. All who knew her will remember her optimism, sense of humor, and love of life.
Alma is survived by her daughters Nancy (Brian) Chambers of Ft. Collins, CO, and Lynda (Mike) Lopata of Wauwatosa, WI, her grandchildren: Eric (Cara) Chambers, Bethany Chambers, Audrey Lopata, Laura (Spencer) Willis, Joel (Krista) Lopata, her great-grandchildren: Elliot, August, Emmett, Addison, and Griffin, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. In addition to her parents and husband, Alma was preceded in death by her three sisters: Mary Swadley, Ruth Sollberger, and Caroline Winkler.
The family will receive guests at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington on Saturday, June 20, from 10:00, before the 11:00 service. Burial will follow at Fondulac Cemetery in East Peoria.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made payable to "FBO Alma J Fassett", through CEFCU. Contributions will go to a scholarship fund for a future teacher from the 2027 EPCH graduating class.
