Obituary
WASHINGTON-Alice Marie Landry, 99, of Washington, IL, died at 1:54 PM Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at Rosewood Care Center in East Peoria.
Born on October 26, 1914 in Sioux City, IA to Martin "Marty" and Mary Brienzo Murphy, she married Raymond J. Landry on August 18, 1936 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Sioux City; after 73 years of marriage, he preceded her in death on January 30, 2010 in Peoria.
Surviving are one son, Dennis (Wanda) Landry of Washington; three grandchildren, Elizabeth "Lisa" (Brian) Landry-McCraw of Beaumont, TX, Cristina "Cristy" (Brian) Landry-Fitzgerald of Venetia, PA, and Knute Landry of Peoria; and 7 great-grandchildren, Michael Fitzgerald, Kayleigh Fitzgerald, McKenzie Fitzgerald, Connor Fitzgerald, Ryan Kavouspour, Sidney Weiler, and Beau Landry.
She was also preceded in death by one sister, Mary Granger and one brother, R. Michael Murphy.
Alice attended Carrol Academy for girls and graduated from Sioux City Cathedral High School in 1932. She worked as a legal secretary in Sioux City and served as Executive Secretary for the American Bowling Congress in Milwaukee, WI. In retirement, Alice worked as an interior decorator for The Lite Touch Home Designs in Islamorada, FL. She and her beloved husband, Raymond, lived in the Florida Keys for 32 years. Early in their marriage they farmed 160 acres in Salix, IA and in the late 1940's went into the food/restaurant business in Sioux City and later in Milwaukee. Alice was known far and wide for her culinary skills, musical talent and decorating ability.
Alice was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Washington where there will be a Funeral Mass at 10 AM Monday, October 6, 2014. Father Steve Willard will officiate. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to mass at the church. There will be a private burial at a later date. Deiters Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington is assisting the family with arrangements.
Memorials may be made to Sophia's Kitchen (serving 500+ meals per day, Monday thru Friday 9-3pm) for the jobless, indigent and for all other persons and children in need. Sophia's Kitchen (c/o Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 504 Fulton Street, Peoria, IL 61602) relies solely on the generosity of the community.
The family wishes to express their thanks and appreciation to the Vitas Hospice organization for their most compassionate care and to Cora Polley and her wonderful staff. Also, our deepest gratitude to the staff and caregivers of the Rosewood Care Center.
