Robert E. Callender, 96, of Secor, passed away at 11:55 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
He was born Sept. 9, 1920 in Peoria to Harry R. and Augusta M. Borer Callender. He married Marie Burke on Oct. 30, 1960 in Sheldon, IL. She survives.
Also surviving are 3 children, Michael Callender of Secor, Elaine Callender of Secor, Roger (Doreen) Callender of Bloomington; 6 grandchildren, Kayleigh and Alec Callender, Bill Ahrendt, Kelly Dellerman, Stacey Ahrendt, Rachel Cole; and several great and great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Arlene Ahrendt; and 2 sisters, Verna and Alberta.
Robert was a US Army WWII Veteran. Following his service to his country he worked as a conductor and brakeman with the TP&W Railroad and was a member of the United Transportation Union, retiring in 1981 after 42 years of service.
Robert was an avid Bradley Basketball fan. He enjoyed his farm life, his dogs, loved the outdoors, listening to Big Band music, and was a devoted family man. He will be dearly missed.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to T.A.P.S. No Kill Animal Shelter in South Pekin.
Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017 at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington. Cremation rites will be accorded with burial at a later date.
