Richard W. "Dick" Atterberry

June 1, 1931 ~ November 30, 2017 (age 86)
Richard W. "Dick" Atterberry, 86, of Washington, passed away Thursday morning, Nov. 30, 2017 at his home.
He was born June 1, 1931 in Washington to Dewey and Margie Gooding Atterberry. He married Mary A. Lasance on May 12, 1951 at St. Patrick Church in Washington. They celebrated 62 wonderful years of marriage before her passing in 2013. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Vernon.
Surviving are 3 children, Rick (Gisele) of Champaign, Lon (Sue) of rural Washburn, LaRae (Bruce) North of El Paso; 5 granddaughters, Kristie (Eric) Schmidt, Shawna (Chad) Wilson, Karynn Graham, Rachel (Mark Vaughan) Atterberry, Valerie (Evan) Easter; 14 great-grandchildren, Kaleigh, Brennan, Christopher, Camden, Faith, Carter, Caleb, Benjamin, Atty, Jane, Rebekah, Maci, Theodore, and Nash. Also surviving are the dear neighbors of Main Street who have brought the Atterberry family great comfort through the years.
He attended WCHS, Bradley University, and the Caterpillar Apprenticeship program. He worked as a tooling engineer at Caterpillar Inc. retiring after 37 years of service in 1987.
He was a member of the Izaak Walton League, Kennel Lake Sportsman's Club, Family Motor Coach Association and Holiday Rambler Club.
Dick was devoted to honoring the memory of his older brother, Vernon, who was lost at sea during WWII. He was very proud of being a lifelong Washington resident and in later years was active in the Washington Historical Society. This generous sweet gentleman never ended a visit without a hug or a conversation without an I Love You.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Washington Historical Society, or Kennel Lake Sportsman's Club.
His funeral service will be at 11am Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2017 at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington, with Pastor Jeff Browning officiating. Visitation will be 2 hours before from 9 to 11 am Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery in Washington.
