Irvin L. Nelson, 84, of Washington, IL died at 5:38 am Monday, July 24, 2017 at Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria.
Born on February 19, 1933 in Chicago, IL, to Elbert and Maggie White Nelson, he married Marcella F. Hummel on December 24, 1951 in St. Augustine, IL. She survives.
Also surviving are 3 children, Mark (Cindy) Nelson of LaGrange, IL, Michelle (Marvin) Homan of East Peoria, IL, and Margo Nelson of Washington, IL, 4 grandchildren, Molly (Cesario) Diaz, Megan Homan, Taylor Pfeifer, and Travis (Kristina) Pfeifer, 3 great-grandchildren, Jordan, Lydia, and Cesily, and 2 more expected soon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 son, Michael Nelson, and 1 sister, Marjorie Calhoun.
He was a proud United States veteran, serving in the Navy and the Marine Corps.
Irvin worked at Caterpillar Tractor Co. where he was the East Peoria Medical Supervisor for 42 years, retiring in 1995.
He was a Boy Scout Leader and NTRA baseball coach for many years, was a founder and Past President of the Mended Hearts Support Group/Peoria Chapter, and was an avid Chicago Bears and Cubs fan. He also participated in the Greater Peoria Honor Flight in 2016.
Services for Irvin will be at 11 am Friday, July 28, 2017 at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Thursday, July 27, 2017 at the funeral home at also ½ hour prior to the services on Friday. A graveside service will be at 1:30 pm Friday, July 28 at Fairview Cemetery in Fairview, IL.
Memorials may be made to Richard L. Owens Hospice Home, Northern Tazewell Rescue Squad or the Greater Peoria Honor Flight.
