WASHINGTON – Louis Joseph “L.J.” Enlow, 71, of Washington, IL, died at 6:04 pm Monday, December 7, 2009 at Proctor Hospital in Peoria, IL.
Born on February 21, 1938 in Hamilton, AL, to Kenneth W. and Gracie Godsey Enlow, he married Marilyn Palmer on September 6, 1958 in Cape Girardeau, MO. She survives.
Also surviving are 5 children, Jamie (Denise) Enlow and Angela (David) Kelly, both of Washington, IL, John (Laura) Enlow of Morton, IL, Deborah (Mark) Lohenitz of Yorktown, VA, and Terra (Rev. Ken) Edgell of Washington, IL, 1 brother-in-law, David Palmer, of Metamora, who at the age of 15 became a part of the Enlow family, 1 brother, Kirby (Patty) Enlow of Plainfield, IN, 2 sisters, Eulora (Harlon) Parnell of Chaffee, MO, and Loretta Kitchen of Cape Girardeau, MO, 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and 2 brothers, Edsil Cheatham and Calvin Cheatham.
L.J. worked in the Insurance Industry for Reliable Life Insurance Co. as a Debit Builder. He later worked at Caterpillar Tractor Co. for 20 years, where he worked in several positions, including parts packaging and being a hydraulic hose maker, retiring in 2004. Louie was also a beloved bus driver to the students of St. Patrick School in Washington and Washington Community High School for more than 12 years, last driving on November 10, 2009.
L.J. was a member of the Highview Church of God in Washington, where he was active in church mission’s projects, taught Sunday school, drove the church bus, and was an involved singer. He also was a lifetime member of the Major League Baseball Association. He greatly enjoyed fishing, was an avid Cardinals fan, and a dedicated family man who always opened his home to others in need.
Funeral Services will be at 11 am Saturday, December 10, 2009 at Highview Church of God, where Pastor Richard Fitzwater will officiate. Visitation will be from 4-7 pm Friday at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington, with additional visitation from 10-10:45 pm on Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery in Washington, where Fr. Joseph P. Donton will conduct the committal prayers.
