EAST PEORIA—John H. Geier, 104, of East Peoria died on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at 2:30 AM at his residence.
He was born one of seven children on December 7, 1904 in Tazewell County to Joseph and Theresa Weiling Geier. He built his own house before he was married, and lived there for 65 years before moving into Riverview Retirement Home. He married his wife of 70 years, Eva F. Heinz on September 5, 1933 in Peoria, IL. She preceded him in death on September 11, 2003.
Surviving is one son, John C. (Yolanda) Geier of San Antonio, TX; two daughters, Julia (Chester) Hefner and Alice (Ray) Giacoletti, both of East Peoria; six grandchildren, Ray Giacoletti, Lori Giebelhausen, Connie Murphy, Heidi Higginson, and Bryan and Scott Hefner; and seven great grandchildren, Katie and Jack Murphy, Tyler, Kylie and Cody Giebelhausen, Zoe Hefner and Olivia Higginson.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters, the last of which died in December 2005 at the age of 103.
John was a lifelong resident of the East Peoria area and member of St. Monica’s Catholic Church. He started working at Caterpillar in 1927, retiring in 1968. A member of the Caterpillar Retiree’s Club, he served eight years as a member of the Board of Directors of the Former Caterpillar Employees’ Credit Union. He was a shop foreman for 26 years in the parts department. John was recently recognized as the oldest living Caterpillar retiree.
While at Riverview, John enjoyed having visitors and playing checkers with his great grandchildren. John had a good sense of humor, and loved to tell jokes.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Monica’s Catholic Church at 10 AM on Wednesday, November 11 with Rev. Fr. Ken Marchulones officiating. Visitation will be held at Deiters Funeral Home & Crematory in East Peoria from 4-6 PM on Tuesday, November 10. Burial will be in Fondulac Cemetery in East Peoria.
