Coon, 85, of Sebring, FL, formerly of Sunnyland, died at 8:05 PM on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at The Palms of Sebring Nursing Home in Sebring, FL. He was born on August 18, 1924 to Ernest A. and Nellie (Schenck) Coon in Oak Hill, IL. He married Irene Sorenson on December 24, 1952 in Peoria, IL. She survives. Also surviving are his daughter, Sue (Brian) Brooks of Washington; son, William S. (Jennifer) Coon, Jr. of Shaker Heights, OH; 6 grandchildren, Brian (Tara) Brooks II of Bethalto, IL, Daniel (Joni) Brooks of Chillicothe, Mike Brooks of Peoria, and David, Meredith, and Steven Coon of Shaker Heights, OH; and one great-granddaughter Taylor Mae Brooks. William was a US Air Force veteran, serving during World War II. He remained in the military for 41 years, having attained the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. He was the last surviving charter member of the Air National Guard in Bartonville. He was a member of the NRA and was a high-powered rifle State Champion for the Air Force. William was also a member of the Men’s Golf Club in Sebring, FL and Ham Radio Operator’s Club. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, October 16, 2009 at Deiters Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington. The Rev. Jim Gorby will officiate. There will be no visitation. Burial will be held at Springdale Cemetery in Peoria, where military rites will be accorded.
