Obituary:
WASHINGTON—Nancy Jane Hinken, 65, of Washington, died peacefully, surrounded by her family and friends, at 10:39 AM on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at her residence. Born on July 9, 1944 in Peoria, Illinois to Leroy “Pat” and Bernice Smith DeFord, she married John Hinken, Jr. on April 8, 1967 in Peoria. He survives. Also surviving are 5 children, Julie Bradshaw of Washington, IL, Michael Hinken of Whitmore Lake, MI, Jim Hinken of Chicago, IL, Steve (Beth) Hinken of Washington, IL, and Laura Jean Hinken of Aurora, CO; and her sister, Sheila (Kenneth) Putney of Peoria, IL; 2 nephews, Tim (Inga Mucha) Putney of Rechester, NY, and David Putney of Norfolk, VA; and 2 nieces, Susan Putney of Peoria, IL, and Gabrielle (James) Steele of Wilmington, NC. Nancy worked as a telephone operator for Illinois and Indiana Bell in Peoria, IL, Indianapolis, IN and Urbana, IL for 10 years. She then worked as a childcare provider in her home from 1990-2000. She nurtured the children in her care as if they were her own, developing close, loving relationships with them. Many of the children called her “Nanny.” She was a member of Evangelical United Methodist Church in Washington, IL where she served as a nursery volunteer and children’s Sunday school teacher. Nancy was a loving and devoted mother for over 30 years. A gifted artist fond of sketching animals and landscapes, as well as loved ones, Nancy also loved sewing, reading, and watching movies with her family. Classic comedies were among her favorites. She was also an avid Cubs fan. A funeral service will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, July 25, 2009 at the Washington Evangelical United Methodist Church, where the Rev. John Hauck will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5-7 PM on Friday, July 24 at Deiters Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington. Cremation rites will be accorded following services. Inurnment of cremated remains will be at Farmdale Cemetery in Washington, IL at a later date.
