Name: Newman "Dunk" Jenkins Date: June 30th, 1921 - April 8th, 2009 Obituary: EAST PEORIA--Newman “Dunk” Jenkins, 87, of East Peoria, died at 9 PM, on Wed, Apr 8, 2009 at Washington Christian Village in Washington. He was born on June 30, 1921 in Logan Co, KY to Charles and Lena Porter Jenkins. He married Margaret Buysse Beck in 1952 in East Peoria. She preceded him in death in Dec 1987. Surviving is his son, Phillip Jenkins of Big Sandy TN; 2 step sons Robert (Sharon) Buysse of Washington, and William (Ann) Buysse of Manito IL; step daughter Edith (Donald) Pearson of Spring Bay IL; sister Lorene Ducey of Monticello IL; special friend Elwanda Markum of Creve Coeur; 13 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandson. He was preceded in death by 6 sisters and 5 brothers. He was a US Navy veteran, having served in the South Pacific during World War II. Dunk was a Purple Heart recipient. He was an oiler in maintenance at Caterpillar Tractor Co for 30 years, and was a member of the UAW Local 974 where he served as Chairman of the Election Committee for many years. Dunk was an active lifetime member of the VFW, and was also a member of Amvets and served as Past Commander for the American Legion. He had been a Field Trial Bird Dog Trainer, and had been active in the Boy Scouts. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Mon, Apr 13 at Deiters Funeral Home & Crematory in East Peoria. Pastor Bob DeBolt will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Burial will be at Fondulac Cemetery in East Peoria, where military rites will be accorded. Memorial contributions may be made in Dunk’s name to the Wounded Warrior Project.
